Dr. Gebhard Visit 8/28/2014

Our visit to Dr. Gebhard was insightful. He asked if he could take more x-rays becuase the ones from Community were not quite good enough. They took them right there in the office and he told us the curves were 54 degrees and 31 degrees. He said he definitely recommended surgery but it was too complex for him to do it.
It was at this point that I really didn't even hear anymore. This is why it is good to have another person in the room with you. I was just sure Dr. Gebhard was going to be the one to fix Joe up. When he told Joe that surgery was needed, that was a hard pill to swallow for Joe. So here we are all in that room -- all experiencing different emotions. Phew.
So we told Dr. Gebhard about the family history of scoliosis on Dave's side and how his mom and niece see a doctor in St. Louis, MO. He said, "The best surgeon in the country is in St. Louis. His name is Dr. Lenke. Otherwise, Dr. Erickson is excellent also and he is at Children's Hospital in Aurora.
Dr. Gebhard felt it was necessary to order MRI's to make sure there was no spinal cord tethering. It was at this visit when we found out that Joe's pain was at a 7 on a daily basis and that he was beginning to feel some numbness in his legs occasionally.
We left Dr. Gebhard's office and realized we had to figure out a direction to go with things now since he couldn't do the surgery. The next day we were flying to Toledo for a family reunion so we decided to just think about it over the weekend -- St. Louis or Denver????
