So about a week ago we get a letter from the high school principal asking us to attend an awards evening at the school last night. It stated that if we were receiving a letter then our child was receiving some type of award. Jessica said her science teacher mentioned something. That's about all we really knew.
We knew about an Academic Letter for good grades, but she thought they handed those out next fall. So we arrive at the auditorium at the school and pick up the 14 page program and start leafing through it to find her name and find out that her teacher nominated her for the outstanding Freshman science student. That's pretty neat. She's in a 10th grade math class (Biology). She received a nice plaque which is hanging in her room now.
Kind of a neat story about this teacher. In the fall, friends were telling her how hard and how mean this biology teacher was. We were pulling up to our mailboxes one day last fall and Jessica was working on her biology homework and she had a question. I wasn't sure of the answer. She happened to look up and there at our mailboxes was her Biology teacher. This woman was older, well-dressed, with super long and curved black finger-nails. I got out of the car and introduced myself. She asked again for Jessica's name as it was the beginning of the year and she was just getting to know her students. I said "We were just discussing the homework and she had a question." The teacher went over to the car and said, "Hi, you have a question?" Jessica got to ask her question, get it answered and find out we were neighbors. Well that incident took away any trepidation about this teacher. They were friends from then on. In fact several times during the year Jessica told me that the teacher would say "Well, if you got a 82 on that test, it must have been too hard." She would judge things based on Jessica's performance. (I think this happens in math too). So we thank her for her nomination and for the award.
The rest of us are doing great too, but this was the excitement of last night. Tonight she has her final choir concert and she has decided to keep with choir for another year, so that's great.
That's all for now.
Congratulations to Jessica. I know how proud you must be. Those are great moments in life to rejoice together!!!
